Icelandic volcano erupts

A volcano beneath Iceland's Eyjafjallajokul glacier triggered floods and steam miles into the air.
Hundreds of local people were immediately evacuated from the area becauseof flash flooding,
with the water carrying blocks of ice the size of small houses down the mountain.
The enormous ash cloud drifted for about 2,000 kilometers. The volcano, which is covered by
an ice cap, last erupted in the 1820s. Iceland, a nation of 320,00 people, sits atop a large volcanic
hot spot in the Atlantic's mid-oceanic ridge, and has a history of devastating eruptions.
